San Fran Apartments and underground circus scene?!?!?

Hello! A friend and I are moving to beautiful San Fran in Sept, looking to get in with the underground circus/theater scene? Does anyone know the best way to go about getting an apt and how much we should expect to pay? ie Would it be feasible to go to San Fran and find a 2 Bedroom apt in the mission in a week for under $1700?

Also, does anyone know about the underground circus scene in San Fran and how to get involved?!!?!?

Many many thanks,
Polina

BEAT CHURCH THIS THUR 7/3 NANDA & TIMONKEY'S ALBUM RELEASE PARTY!]

Come join us for an awesome beat church this thursday as we celebrate increadible new releases from two of our Santa Cruz homies...NANDA'S EP "somewhere between worlds" and TIMONKEY'S Album "Cerulea" both amazing musical landscapes just out on MUTI music & both available from addictech and other sources. These guys have both been developing a very unique eclectic sound influenced by a wide range of musical styles over the years evolving into a powerful moving musical experience. I feel they are both at the heart of what beat church has been offering us all over these years and we are super excited have them back to bless the church with the beats and rhythm's from the new material they have been working on. Kitty D & myself will be aloting ourselfs a little more time to throw down for you where we have lacked the last few times due to such a full line up of guests. It promises to be a very special night of new music from deeply brewed local talent, which we hope you will all come out to support this thursday...as an alternative to some of the other choices you may have. Thank you again for keeping the family and community strong!

Currently I am working on a "Texas Recycle" project. I am customizing 26 gal. cans. There is a daytime photo of one in my album. The logos will be lit at night, like an "exit" sign. I am going to try to recycle at the major events in the Austin area (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas are close enough...+/- 3 hour drive). Anyhow, I think some of y'all should take on the project as well. Obviously there is still a problem with not recycling at major events.

Dear All,

As community members, we understand the meaning of "community" and
what it represents as well as serves. In this context, I would like
to present you an opportunity to help youths around the world
experience "community" that has no national borders, no city-divides.

Many of you may have heard of the International Children's Games (ICG:
www.icg2008. com)--ICG promotes peace and friendship through sports and
is the Olympics for youths from around the world. San Francisco is
honored to be the host city for the 42nd ICG and will extend
hospitality to these young athletes. To make our young delegates feel
even more welcome, we would like to tap into our local Bay Area
communities and ask that they participate in the ICG "Adopt A City"
program.

Your help is simple, yet tremendous.. .All you need to do is browse
through the cities listed below and help me come up with corresponding
local communities and community leaders who might be interested in
adopting a ICG city. Once I get some names and addresses from you, the
ICG volunteer office will mail them a packet that explains how to
"Adopt A City." Thank you and hope to hear from you soon!

Clean Planet Recycling Website: http://xrl.us/CleanPlanet

I had an old, leaky washing machine that I was keeping around to wash sandy, windsurfing beach towels but I never hooked it up to water the lawn to recycle the rinse water before putting the towels, without sand, into my regular machine. Not worth the trouble....

Anyway, I posted the machine on Craigs List FOR FREE and "Clean Planet Recycling" saw the ad, sent me an email and came to get it, all within hours. They might fix it to sell for a small profit or sell the working parts like the motor and pumps after stripping the copper wire and selling the metal for scrap.

Details: Clean Planet Recycling of Redwood City, CA

* Free Scrap Metal Pickup
* Small and Large appliance removal (A small fee to cover gas and drive time may be charged for special trips. Email for quote. )
* We take water heaters, washers, dryers, laptops, TVs, computer monitors, anything electrical working or not.
* Old farm equipment, engine blocks or buckets of nails
* Can pick-up and remove one item or hundreds.

Contact Details for an appointment or directions to drop-off for free at their facility. http://xrl.us/CleanPlanet

Hi

I am a local author in San Francisco spreading word about my new book about my life working on a cruise ship. Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship chronicles my wacky job search to get my dream job as Assistant Cruise Director and takes you behind the scenes on a cruise ship.

Witnessing rescues at sea, stowaways, fatalities, and passionate romances are just some of the day to day events revealed in this intriguing and humorous account.

Go to www.permanentpassenger.com to see more about the book.

Available in Bay Area bookstores including Stacey's, Books Inc at Opera Plaza, Get Lost Travel Bookstore, Book Passage and online.

Truly a very funny insightful book that will make you laugh – cry – and throw up just a bit.

Cheers

Costume and Fashion industry in SF/ East Bay

Hello,
It's been 5 years since I moved from the Bay, and she's calling me home again..

Before I move, I want to check out my job prospects. I am a costume designer and fashion designer by trade.
So, I am wondering if you all have any information on clothing companies in the area that may need a new designer at some point, or have info on which theater costume shops are the best, and when their seasons are.

Thanks for your help!

Creating a SF Bay Area Night Shift Workers Tribe

Greetings from Austin, TX. I'll keep this brief: I want one of you, or a few of you, to create a tribe for SF Bay Area night shift workers and work to promote it. It is a great community service project. I worked the night shift for 6 months in Seattle, and I have talked to a few other people here in Austin who have worked the shift and I promise you that most know of the shift as being quite miserable. Books, movies, and video games, and the like, are not sufficient for people working the shift. People are social but the night shift generally does not allow people to be social enough. Fixing this problem would help society: the shift is necessary for businesses to function well, but the workers of the shift are fairly neglected. Here is my tribe in Austin: tribes.tribe.net/answ1 Feel free to use the layout.

Promoting: I advertised in the Austin Chronicle for 2 weeks. It was an unsuccessful ad, but I think the problem is that Austin does not have enough businesses open during the 2AM-6AM hours.
Solution: I think that what people in Austin need for developing a social life for night shift workers is successful models. SF Bay Area is a more populated region that probably has many businesses open for night shift workers. A tribe that caters to the night shift will help workers and businesses. Businesses can promote events such as the broadcasting of a rugby match @ 4AM @ such-and-such deli.

Thanks for your time,
Matt

Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire, Sinead O'Connor, Tom Waits, etc) in SF THIS Tuesday Night!

Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 8:00pm, $10 to $15 sliding scale
COLIN STETSON
DARREN JOHNSTON
SCOTT AMENDOLA
At the Climate Theater
285 9th Street @ Folsom, San Francisco

COLIN STETSON
He is THE jazz player to watch out for. Colin has a unique sax voice. His work has been featured on the David Letterman Show, in sessions and on tour with Tom Waits, Sinead O'Connor, Burning Spear and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Anthony Braxton and "TV On The Radio". He is currently touring with the band, ARCADE FIRE, playing clarinet, bass clarinet, french horn, cornet and bass saxophone. Web: http://www.colinstetson.com Some YouTubes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5SH7JFv2yo With Transmission: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ1d6-iSq2w

Quote: "Michigan native Colin Stetson is like the Roger Federer of avant-garde instrumental music. While the Swiss tennis player has changed the way we think of tennis, Stetson is redefining the possibilities of woodwind and brass instruments. Equally at home on the flute, French horn, clarinet, and saxophone, Stetson's musical innovations bring to mind the work of Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser and John Zorn. "

Joining Colin will be Darran Johnston and Scott Amendola.

About Scott Amendola (from the NY Times): "The drummer Scott Amendola could fairly be described as a jazz musician with an investment in the imperatives of groove. He seems to come by his eclecticism naturally: when rock, bebop and Afrobeat take turns surfacing in his music, they do so in a way that feels loose and unforced. " Web: http://www.scottamendola.com

About Darren Johnston: "As a performer, Johnston has performed, and/or recorded with such innovative musicians and composers as guitarist Fred Frith, clarinetist Don Byron, bassist Marcus Shelby, bassist Herbie Lewis, the ROVA Saxophone Quartet, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, and others. He was recently listed last June by Downbeat Magazine as one of “25 Trumpeters of the Future.” Web: http://www.darrenjohnstonmusic.com

Tribe's been very good to me.

So has the Bay Area.

(Ghetto Celebrity, my memoir from 2003, probably only really sold well in SF, Seattle and Boston. Maybe half of my used copy sales have gone to Tribe members.)

So, please be aware of my second book:

http://www.amazon.com/Rollin-Dre-Unauthorized-Account-Insiders/dp/0345498224

It's a fun, edgy book. I'll warn that you pretty much have to be interested in hardcore rap music to have much use for it. But I'm pretty proud of the thing. Anyway, it will help sell my third book, which is going out to publishers next month.

Thanks!

Two GREAT Jazz Shows @ Climate Theater SF

CLIMATE THEATRE MUSIC BOX SERIES
The Place to HEAR the Music

Oh my goodness! So many things to tell you!

First, the Music Box Series has a new website. This is an added advantage over the MySpace page because (1) you won't be inundated with ads, and more importantly (2) it's super-simple to link people's names to their web pages so that you can sample their music and see their smiling faces before you come to any show.

Second, I'm pleased to present an ASTOUNDING evening of electronic and electronic-influenced music. For the acoustic purists let me say that the beauty of music is the ability to take found objects and make music out of them. Sometimes people play musical saws and hammer on pieces of metal they found in the junkyard. Or they play jugs or string a rope on a washtub and call it a washtub bass. So, why not use electronics the same way? Why not experiment?

--David Kaye, curator of the Music Box Series

Here's the lowdown on Michael Straus, the featured performer this Tuesday:

====================================================

Next Show

MICHAEL STRAUS
Saxophonist Michael Straus' (b. 1983, New Orleans) abilities and dedication to the performance of new music have led to a variety of engagements at venues ranging from Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center and New York City's The Stone to Italy's Festival Internazionale del Sassofono. His strong commitment to today's music, coupled with his close work alongside composers has resulted in over twenty new compositions by both emerging and established composers Halim El-Dabh, Matthew Burtner, Peter V. Swendsen, Per Bloland, Vitor Rua and Liduino Pitombeira among several others. Recent premieres include everything from large chamber works to solo compositions incorporating multi-channel audio and film projection.

As a frequent composer of electroacoustic music, Michael's compositions have been heard throughout the United States and Canada. His numerous recordings as a saxophonist, didgeridoo player and composer can be heard on SEAMUS, New Tertian and The Walter's Art Museum record labels.

Michael is an Enrico Di Giovanni Scholarship Recipient and winner of several other accolades including two Helen Gold and Derryl Haymon Scholarships and a Peabody Career Development Grant.

45ISDISTANCE
[45isdistance] has been described as one of the most innovative glitch-pop bands in the Bay Area, "blending surreal electronic textures with symphonic instruments, generating unexpected atmospheres of warm lo-fi and enthusiastic post-rock." 2 guys from Chile and Italy. Idea of the sound of hardware failure, warm and sweet lo-fi, experimental sounds, symphonic build ups and intimacy. JuanPablo: Machines, Acoustic Drums, Keyboards, Trumpet. Stefano: Machines, Guitar, Keyboard.
====================================================

Following Show

Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 8:00pm
COLIN STETSON
DARREN JOHNSTON
SCOTT AMENDOLA

Cover $10 to $15 sliding scale
Climate Theater
285 9th Street @ Folsom
San Francisco

I once managed Colin's band, Transmission, an avant garde jazz band in the Thomas Chapin tradition. He's the single person who brought me back to appreciating jazz. Colin has a unique sax voice. His work has been featured on the David Letterman Show, in sessions and on tour with Tom Waits, Sinead O'Connor, Burning Spear and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Anthony Braxton and TV On The Radio. He is currently touring with the band, ARCADE FIRE, playing clarinet, bass clarinet, french horn, cornet and bass saxophone.

About Scott (from the NY Times): "The drummer Scott Amendola could fairly be described as a jazz musician with an investment in the imperatives of groove. He seems to come by his eclecticism naturally: when rock, bebop and Afrobeat take turns surfacing in his music, they do so in a way that feels loose and unforced. "

About Darren: "As a performer, Johnston has performed, and/or recorded with such innovative musicians and composers as guitarist Fred Frith, clarinetist Don Byron, bassist Marcus Shelby, bassist Herbie Lewis, the ROVA Saxophone Quartet, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, and others. He was recently listed last June by Downbeat Magazine as one of “25 Trumpeters of the Future.”

After 17 years as a commercial photographer I have decided that instead of complaining about the decline in photography as an art form I am going to do something about it. Beginning June 7 I will be hosting experiential photography Treks in the SF bay area and throughout Northern California. The Treks will teach the art of mindfully designing a great photograph. For more information please visit

Hope that you will join me - should be very informative, shared with good people and great fun.

Prevention of HIV/AIDS rather than a pharmaceutical solution: a superior method

me: not a perfect thinker
incident: a poke in the finger while cleaning near a freeway
I preferred females that were not sexually promiscuous, assuming that I would be adequately safe.
I wanted and did get tested for HIV/AIDS before seeking sexual contact. At a certain point I decided that it would be best to know the HIV/AIDS status of a partner, or partners, before sexual contact. I have the official medical document and I demand the official medical document of a partner, or partners.

URGENT! PLEASE HELP TIBET! SIGN THIS PETITION!

URGENT! PLEASE HELP TIBET! SIGN THIS PETITION!
PLEASE REPOST!

> Dear friends,
>
> After decades of repression under Chinese rule,
> the Tibetan people’s frustrations have burst
> onto the streets in protests and riots. With the
> spotlight of the upcoming Olympic Games now on
> China, Tibetans are crying out to the world for
> change.
>
> The Chinese government has said that the
> protesters who have not yet surrendered "
> will be punished". Its leaders are right
> now considering a crucial choice between
> escalating brutality or dialogue that could
> determine the future of Tibet, and China.
>
> We can affect this historic choice--China does
> care about its international reputation. China’s
> President Hu Jintao needs to hear that the ’Made
> in China’ brand and the upcoming Olympics in
> Beijing can succeed only if he makes the right
> choice. But it will take an avalanche of global
> people power to get his attention--and we need
> it in the next 48 hours.
>
> The Tibetan Nobel peace prize winner and
> spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama has called for
> restraint and dialogue: he needs the world’s
> people to support him. Click below now to sign
> the petition--and tell absolutely everyone you
> can right away--our goal is 1 million voices
> united for Tibet:
>
::: SIGN THE PETITION! :::
http://www.avaaz.org/en/tibet_end_the_violence/6.php
>
> China’s economy is totally dependent on "
> Made in China" exports that we all buy, and
> the government is keen to make the Olympics in
> Beijing this summer a celebration of a new
> China, respected as a leading world power. China
> is also a very diverse country with a brutal
> past and has reason to be concerned about its
> stability -- some of Tibet’s rioters killed
> innocent people. But President Hu must recognize
> that the greatest danger to Chinese stability
> and development comes from hardliners who
> advocate escalating repression, not from
> Tibetans who seek dialogue and reform.
>
> We will deliver our petition directly to Chinese
> officials in London, New York, and Beijing, but
> it must be a massive number before we deliver
> the petition. Please forward this email to your
> address book with a note explaining to your
> friends why this is important, or use our tell-a-
> friend tool to email your address book--it will
> come up after you sign the petition.
>
> The Tibetan people have suffered quietly for
> decades. It is finally their moment to speak--we
> must help them be heard.
>
> With hope and respect,
>
> Ricken, Iain, Graziela, Paul, Galit, Pascal,
> Milena, Ben and the whole Avaaz team
>
> PS - It has been suggested that the Chinese
> government may block the Avaaz website as a
> result of this email, and thousands of Avaaz
> members in China will no longer be able to
> participate in our community. A poll of Avaaz
> members over the weekend showed that over 80% of
> us believed it was still important to act on
> Tibet despite this terrible potential loss to
> our community, if we thought we could make a
> difference. If we are blocked, Avaaz will help
> maintain the campaign for internet freedom for
> all Chinese people, so that our members in China
> can one day rejoin our community.

I recently encountered quite the dilemma with my current girlfriend. We have been going out for around 7 months, and it has been going great. However, just until maybe a month or two ago, she has not been able to get excited (meaning sexually). Before, she would get wet pretty fast, and I was able to please her. Now, I'll spend near to half an hour just to get her wet, and more recently she hasn't at all. Is this a loss of attraction towards me from her point of view, or am I just doing something wrong? We have a good emotional relationship, but I know that pleasing her sexually is a way of showing my love for her physically. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you.

By the way, I'm new to this so I'm not exactly sure how this works, so I am sorry in advance if I do not follow the rules.

Pirates for Children’s Hospital of Orange County (“Pirates4choc”) was started by Evan Pagay, an Orange County DJ and Jack Sparrow impersonator, and Matt Stone, owner of Seawolf Clothing Company in Huntington Beach. Evan and Matt gathered a group of piratical celebrities and entertainers to donate their time to entertain, give out toys, and play games with the children and their families in the hospital.

Please help...
Do you know a guy who travels between SF and Bali selling coconut shell and bone carved, gauged earrings? Four years ago I bought exquisite earrings from him at the Cell Space Holiday craft fair (or whatever) and today they broke. I think his name was Jessie and at the time he traveled with a girlfriend who sold sarongs from Bali. If you can help me out, please contact me directly. I would be so thankful!

Couchsurfer Seeking Room or Studio in SF

I just moved to the bay area, currently staying at a decent though smallish budget hotel in North Beach. I'm a well traveled guy, did a 13 month long trip around the world last year, and more recently spent time working as a field organizer in Pennsylvania on an anti-war campaign and in Iowa and my home state, Kansas, for Barack Obama. I'm 24, male, now (as of the 20th) working for the Sierra Club as a Grassroots Media Coordinator.

Looking for a couchsurfing friendly (i promise, if you've never done it, you'll love it. you get to meet the most amazing people from all around the world! check out my profile - http://www.couchsurfing.com/profile.html?id=LC0H0P - and see my references!) place in a cool neighborhood - walking distance to cafe's, bars, and public transit. I have no car, and no furniture though getting some would be no big deal.

as a roommate, I'm pretty clean, considerate, and respect people's privacy. i tend to get very annoyed by people who don't clean up after themselves, and who aren't considerate. I'm easygoing, you'll never seen me get upset or lose my temper, partly because I'm good at keeping things in perspective. anyway, shoot me and email if I seem like the type of guy for your spare room!

Congestion Pricing Poll

The SF Business Times asks: Is it fair to ask users of a resource -- Doyle Drive, in this case -- to pay for it through a toll? Give them your opinion by visiting http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/poll/

From http://www.sfcta.org/content/view/275/94/

Doyle Drive is the primary highway and transit linkage through San Francisco, between counties to the south (San Mateo and Santa Clara) and to the north (Marin and Sonoma). As a multimodal corridor, Doyle Drive currently carries:

91,000 weekday vehicles
17,000 weekday transit riders
127,000 weekday persons in cars
144,000 weekday persons in all modes
To put this in perspective, the entire 74-mile Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system carries about 250,000 passengers per day.

Doyle Drive serves many non-work related trip purposes, particularly on weekends (tourism and recreation). But on weekdays, it is most heavily used for work trips, which account for 88% of total use during peak hours and 48% during off-peak hours.

Looking for Artists and Models for Life Drawing Space in SF

What: Life Drawing
Where: SF's SOMA District, (1 block away from Yerba Buena Gardens 4 block from Powell BART)
When: TBD
Cost: TBD

Artists, Models, and Other Creatively-Wired Individuals,

We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.

ARTISTS:
As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Tuesdays: 8:30 AM-12:00 PM, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Wednesdays: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

Thank You,

Thanks! This is for a friend, Lura B, very cool. She's on tribe and asked me if I knew of any places and I thought I'd post here for her. She's very creative and I think she makes beautiful knick knacks, but I haven't seen her in action that way (only as a magnificent costume creator).. She needs a room- I don' know how big and she can pay -I don't know how much , but is anything reasonable out there? She would consider to share.

Thanks,
Aberrant behavior-auditions saturday the 19th 2263 mission (between 18th & 19th) 3:30-6:30 (Also looking for crew)

'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery (that features nudity/partial nudity)you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Here is the plot:
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. Who are in a very self destructive relationship, there perfect for each-other except they literally kill each-other by being together. A lot of psycho-sexual/self mutilation-masochism in this one. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis.

Keep in mind the budget of this movie will probably stay around 25-35, 000 dollars (already secured), so just warning I can't pay the highest rates

Thanks-
Jason
